South America is the birthplace of potato, where the agrarian potato still can be met. The Liberal Economic Society connected potato appearance in Russia with the name of Peter the Great, who sent the sack of potato tubers from the Netherlands to Moscow for distribution across the districts for cultivation.

Nowadays potato is planted all over the world in temperate climatic province. Potato tubers form the considerable part food ration of the Northern hemisphere nations (the Russians, Belarusians, Poles & Canadians).

In 2014 the potato export to Russia increased by more than 30% compared to the same period of 2013, and more than 50% to 2012. The key exporters to Russia are Egypt, China & India. Egypt is the biggest of them. It ships more than 100 000 tons annually to Russia.

Varieties:

There is a plenty of potato varieties for different economic use, such as table, industrial, stock feed & multipurpose potatoes.  The table potatoes are distinguished by good eating qualities and are used for cooking.

By ripening period all potato types are divided in

  • early, which are harvested in 50-65 days after seeding;
  • mid - early types harvesting in 65-85 days;
  • mid - ripening types harvesting in 85-95 days;
  • average-late (in 95-110 days);
  • late types harvesting in more than 110 days.

Country of Origin:

Egypt. The wholesale potato production began after the First World War. The British colonial authorities supported the potato manufacturing to afford the military supplies. After the war the potato expanse met difficulties due to the low quality of imported seeds & local farmers’ lack of experience in potato cultivating. The things changed in 1961, when the irrigative production concentrated in the Delta went up on 5% annually. Between 1990 & 2007 the annual output increased from 1,6 to 2,6 million tons making the Egypt the main potato producer in Africa. The key table exporting varieties are Spunta, Nicola, Diamont, Mondial.
