More than 250 species & hybrids of peppers are known nowadays, though there are only five types of capsicum.

  • Capsicum annuum is the most popular.  Cayenne pepper, Cuban pepper & all varieties of sweet peppers belong to this type. “Annuum” means “annual”, that is not true, because some varieties are perennials.
  • Capsicum Chinense or “Chinese” pepper. The hottest peppers belong to this type, such as Habanero, Scotch Bonnet, Red Savina. It differs by strong fruit fragrant, reminding the apricot.
  • Capsicum Baccatum or “berrylike” capsicum. It is known in America as Aji Colorado Chile or Chile. This type differs by the yellow or brown stains on the blossom trusses.
  • Capsicum Frutescens or “bushy” pepper. The most popular varieties are Tabasco & Malaguetta.
  • Capsicum Pubescens or “downy” pepper. It is the less known type of the grown capsicums. Peruvian Rocotto & Mexican Manzano belong to this type. This type is the most demanding for growing.
