In Italian the name of this vegetable means “golden apple”. Tomatoes belong to Solanaceae family, potato & egg-plant also belong to this type. Besides the traditional red tomatoes the yellow, orange, pink, green & black vegetables can be met on the shelves of retail.

 The total Russian tomato import in 2014 amounted 845 848 tons according to Federal Customs Service, what made nearly 35% of total vegetable import to the Russian market. Tomatoes are importing to Russia from Turkey, China, Israel & Egypt. The main tomato importer is Turkey. Its share in total Russian tomato import amounted 43% in 2014. The share of China made 10,7%.

According to the Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Monitoring Service fresh tomato import volume increased up to 1 thousand tons, shipped in by Armenia, 2 thousand tons from Egypt & 3,5 thousand tons from Azerbaijan since January till February 2016. However in the beginning of 2015 the tomatoes from Egypt &  Azerbaijan had the token imports, and from Armenia were not imported at all.

Our company supplies the Russian market with cherry tomatoes produced by our strategic partner in Egypt – “ROYAL FRUITS” Company. Tomatoes from Egypt are available since November till April. Besides the local tomatoes are also available for our customers. The season for local produce lasts since May till September.

Varieties:

  • Hybrids. The tomatoes grown from the seeds of mixed species are called so. 
  • Beaf tomatoes are large & veiny. Their weight is more than 150 grams. By contrast to classical varieties, this type has 4 segments of pith instead of 2 ones.
  • Grapevine tomatoes. Varieties, which grow in bunches, are called “grapevine”. It’s common for these types, that both young & ripe vegetables are tight, they don’t chap & effuse on to the other vegetables, when the humidity rises. The Merlis 1 belongs to the grapevine varieties.
  • Cherry tomatoes. These are the small-fruited varieties with bright flavor, which look like the ripe cherry. These varieties belong to this type: busiki, honey drop, white currant, black cherry, cherrylike variety, red / yellow cherry.
  • Small-fruited tomatoes with vegetables of not more than 60 grams & elevated concentration of fructose remember  by their distinctive taste.
  • Indeterminate tomatoes have the steady growth footstalk. Such plants are good for growing in a greenhouse.
  • Determinate tomatoes stop growing as soon as two inflorescences appear. The vegetables of these varieties ripe all at the same time.

Country of Origin:

Egypt. Nearly 200 000 hectares of 2,9 million hectares acreage is occupied by tomato production. The total tomato output had grown from 6,8 to 8,6 million tons since 2002 till 2006. Almost all kinds of tomatoes are cultivated in Egypt both the normal round average vegetables, beefsteak tomatoes, cherry & plum tomatoes. Three crops annually are harvested in Egypt.

Russia. In Russia tomatoes are grown in Southern & North Caucasian Federal Districts.
