Indian region Assam is considered to be mango birthplace. Nowadays mango is planted in many countries: in USA, Mexico, China, South & Central American countries; on the Caribbean Islands, in African tropical zone (Kenya & Cote d'Ivoire); in Asian countries (Thailand, the Philippines); in Egypt, Israel & Australia. Mango is called “the fruit king” due to its taste & flavor. Latin American countries (Brazil, Peru, Mexico & Costa Rica), Thailand, Israel, Egypt, Pakistan & India are the main mango exporters to Europe & Russia. Mexico is the biggest global producer. The Mexican season goes on since January until October. The most fruit is shipped to Europe, mainly to Spain, France & Netherlands. USA is also important Mexican export destination. The most popular varieties grown in Mexico are: Tommy Atkins, Kent, Keitt, Haden, Atailfo.

The main destinations of Pakistan mango export are Portugal, Finland, China, Russia & Japan.

Israel takes about 20% of European mango market. Israel mangoes are represented almost everywhere in the biggest European retails. In addition to European market Israel develops such export destinations as Russia, Jordan, Singapore & South Africa.

Royal Fresh Company imports mangoes from Egypt & Israel. The Egyptian season runs on since June till September. Fruit from Israel are available from July till November.

Varieties:

There are more than 1000 mango varieties in the world. More than 500 varieties are known in India alone, but only 35 of them are widely grown. Mango fruit differ in size, shape & peel color depending on variety & ripen stage.

  • Pink-orange mango. Its fruit have the narrow, oblong shape; thin, pale-orange, touched with pink skin. The Keitt & Tommy Atkins varieties belong to this type.
    Keitt. This variety is considered to be the best of all late-flowering. Its fruit are rather large, bright-yellow with pink side. The pulp is yellow, very delicate, sweet, juicy & sufficiently hard. The ripening stage is from July till October. Tommy Atkins. This variety was bred in Florida in 1948. Fruit are average, orange yellow, with purple side. The fruit pulp is yellow, rather hard & juicy. Fruit are good for transporting. It ripens from June till July.
  • Pink-green mango. This variety is seldom met, but is justly considered one of the best. The mango is green outside, with deep orange, extremely juicy & sweet pulp inside.
  • Small green mango. It is the smallest of known varieties. They have soft, bright-green skin. Fruit of this under-regarded variety are much more tasty & sweet, than of the bigger congeners.  They weight not more than 200 grams.
  • Dark green mango.The ripe fruit is dark-green with strong taste. The pulp is remarkably soft, deep orange. Their weight varies between 200 & 500 grams.  
  • Yellow mango is the most popular variety. It is widely regarded as “noble” variety. This variety fruit have the prolate form & may be of different size. A fruit weight may reach 500 grams. Such popular varieties, as Kent belong to this type. 
    Kent variety was bred in 1940. Fruit are large, fragrant, greenish - yellow, with delicate & juicy pulp. This variety is considered as one of the best. Its ripen stage is from July till September. 
  • Huge mango.  The fruit of huge mango have the similar taste as the pink-orange variety. But its flavor is less pronounced. The pulp is more soft & delicate. The weight of one fruit can reach 800 grams.  

Country of Origin:

Egypt. Mango season comes in June and goes on till September. 20 mango varieties of different color, shape & taste can be met in Egypt.

Israel is one of the main mango exporters to the European market. Key exporting varieties are Keitt, Tommy Atkins & local Israel varieties Maya & Shelly. Local varieties take about 30% of total Israel export.
