Blackberry is the bush with perennating vimens living for 1-2 years. There are thorny and thornless types of blackberry. It was unexpanded in Eurasia due to the other berries, such as raspberry, currant and gooseberry, had become more known before. The thornless type had gotten more large & sweet berries. The thorny type, on the other side, is very good for making the hedges.

Mexico, USA & Canada dominate on the global market. The most of the existing varieties of the plant were bred, tried out & reproduced there. The local Russian varieties are the hybrids of European & American types.

Varieties:

All the varieties are separated into few types by ripening period: early, average & late-ripening.

Early types let us enjoy blackberries as early as the first summer month. Their berries taste sour & are less fragrant but suit for processing and cooking of jams. Thornfree, Lohtey, Caraka Black, Natches & Columbia star varieties belong to this type.

Average-ripening blackberries prolong the berrying season. They have more synchronized ripening. The juice of their berries is more thick & flavorful. There are thorny & thornless types among these varieties. Black satin, Lauton are average-ripening.

Late varieties let us to enjoy blackberries till mid-August. They suit for canning & juises. The late types are Navaho, Texas, Apache.

Fall-bearing types have tidy, compact, low bushes. But sometimes it bows to the ground under the weight of ripe berries that’s why the prop is necessary. This type of blackberry is genetically able to give crops biannually. The most often varieties of this type are Ruben, Black Magic.
