Varieties:
There are three kinds of avocado: Mexican, Guatemalan & West Indian. All modern avocado varieties, which are under cultivation, trace its roots to these three kinds.
- The Mexican avocado has thin-coated fruit & leaves smelling of anise when rubbed. It’s the cold-resistant plant, which feels good in subtropical zone.
- The Guatemalan avocado has large, thick-skinned fruit. These plants are more demanding & less cold-resistant.
- The most delicate variety is West Indian, grown mostly in the tropic.
- Such popular varieties, often met on the shelves of our shops, are:
- The Reed avocado has round or oblong fruit, thick & pimpled dark-green skin & light-yellow pulp. Its taste is with the touch of pear & nut.
- Fuerte fruit is pear-shaped, with smooth, shiny, green skin & delicate, sweetish, creamy taste.
- Pinkerton fruit are elongate, pear-shaped, with green, scored skin. Their skin darkens while ripening. The pulp is yellowish, with delicate sweetish taste.
- Hass is the most popular variety. It is the only type, available all the year round. Its fruit is oval-shaped with thick, black skin in ripen state & white or yellowish oily pulp of nutty flavor.
- The Ettinger has pear-shaped fruit with large freestone & soft, melting pulp.
