Cherries
Sweet cherry is the close relative of wild cherry. In English the sweet cherry & wild cherry are named by the same word. The sweet cherry is planted in Europe for more than two thousand years. It was grown in ancient Greece before Christ. In Middle Ages the cherry orchards expanded throughout the Eastern & Central Europe. More than 4000 different varieties of cherries are known all over the world.
The main world cherry exporters are USA, Turkey, Hong Kong, Chile & Spain.
Turkey is the first-string European producer of dessert and juice cherries. Supplies to Russia take more than 20% of total Turkish export of sweet & tart cherries. Russia takes the second part after EU countries in Turkish cherries export in terms of volume. In 2014 more than 56702 tons of cherries were imported to Russian Federation. Turkish cherries take about 30% of all Russian import.

All the cherry varieties belong to two groups: gean & bigarreau.
- Gean varieties are early-ripening with tender, juicy & sweet flesh. They are used fresh, have the short shelf life and are low-transportable.
- Bigarreau varieties have a firm, resilient flesh, are mid & late ripening. They are good for canning & freezing. Though these cherries also have a short shelf-life, they are good for transporting.
By ripening period all cherry varieties are divided into three groups: early, mid-ripening & late.
- Early varieties ripe in the mid-June.
- Mid-ripening cherries are available from the end of June till the beginning of July.
- Late varieties ripe about in mid-July.
